Honey, Your Skin Is Thirsty & Your Lashes Are Shedding: Let's Talk About It!
The seasons are changing, and apparently, so is everything else. Here's what your skin, hair, and lashes are trying to tell you.
You know that moment when you step outside, feel that first chilly breeze, and think, "Oh, fall is finally here!"? Well, while you're getting excited about cozy sweaters, pumpkin spice, and all things autumn, your skin and hair might have a slightly different opinion.
Suddenly, your face feels like the Sahara Desert, your hairbrush is collecting enough hair to start a wig business, and your lash extensions seem to be disappearing faster than your motivation on a Monday morning.
Honey, welcome to seasonal changes!
Here in Central Pennsylvania, our weather likes to keep us guessing. One day it's 75 degrees and sunny, and the next we're digging through the closet for a winter coat. At Haus of Proventus Beauty Salon in Camp Hill, PA, we see firsthand how these changes can affect your skin, scalp, hair, and even your lash extensions. So grab your coffee, get comfortable, and let's talk about what's happening and more importantly, what we can do about it.
Your Skin Is Thirsty, Darling. Give Her a Drink!
Let's start with the obvious: dry skin. As temperatures drop, the air outside becomes less humid, and turning on the heat inside doesn't exactly help matters. Before you know it, your skin is feeling tight, flaky, irritated, and about as comfortable as wearing jeans to Thanksgiving dinner.
Here's what's happening: Your skin has a natural protective barrier that helps hold moisture in and keep irritants out. When cold weather and dry indoor air start pulling moisture away, that barrier can struggle to keep up. Even our oily-skinned friends aren't exempt. Yes, honey, you can have oily skin and still be dehydrated. Life really does have a sense of humor.
So what's a person to do? Start by showing your skin a little extra love. Switch to a richer moisturizer if needed, look for hydrating ingredients like hyaluronic acid, and don't go scrubbing your face like you're trying to get a stain out of the carpet. Over-exfoliating already dry skin is like adding hot sauce to a sunburn. Let's not.
At Haus of Proventus, our customized facial treatments focus on what your skin actually needs, not just what worked for you six months ago. Sometimes your skin needs a little extra hydration, sometimes it needs barrier support, and sometimes it just needs you to stop experimenting with every product you saw on TikTok.
We say that with love, of course.
Why Is There Enough Hair in My Brush to Make a Whole New Person?
Now, let's talk about hair shedding, because this one tends to send people into a panic.
First things first: shedding hair is normal! Your hair naturally goes through different phases of growth, rest, and shedding. Most people lose around 50–100 hairs a day. Yes, every single day! And some research suggests that certain people experience increased shedding during late summer and fall.
So if you've been noticing a little more hair in your shower drain lately, don't start planning your wig collection just yet.
Think of your hair like the trees outside. There's a natural cycle of growth and shedding, although human hair doesn't follow the seasons as dramatically as autumn leaves. Some hairs finish their growth cycle and make room for new ones. It's a normal part of how our bodies work.
Now, that doesn't mean every kind of hair loss should be brushed off as seasonal. If you're experiencing sudden thinning, bald patches, or significant shedding that continues, it's worth checking in with a dermatologist. Hormones, stress, illness, nutritional deficiencies, and other factors can affect hair growth, too.
But a few extra strands in your brush? Sometimes your hair is just doing what hair does.
Your Lash Artist Knows You've Been Shedding, Honey. We Can See the Evidence!
Oh, our lash extension clients, this one's especially for you!
Have you ever come in for your usual lash fill and said, "I don't know what's happening! My lashes never fall out this fast!"
Well, sweetheart, sometimes your natural lashes are simply going through their own little life cycle.
Your eyelashes grow, rest, shed, and grow again, just like the hair on your head. And here's something you might not know: your lash artist can often see the evidence of shedding and regrowth before you even realize what's happening.
During your lash fill appointments, we're not just gluing on a few new lashes and sending you on your merry way. We're examining your natural lashes, checking their condition, and looking at how much new growth is coming in.
Sometimes we'll notice lots of tiny, baby lashes popping up where longer, mature lashes used to be. Other times, we'll see more gaps than usual or fewer mature lashes available for extensions. Those little baby lashes are often a sign that new growth is underway.
And let us tell you, sometimes those baby lashes are showing up like they've all been invited to the same family reunion.
Here's the important part: When a natural lash reaches the end of its growth cycle, it can shed with the extension still attached. That doesn't automatically mean your lash artist did something wrong, and it doesn't necessarily mean you've been doing anything wrong with your aftercare.
If you're shedding more than usual, your extensions may appear less full between appointments. And while seasonal hair shedding has been studied, scientists haven't firmly established a predictable fall shedding season for eyelashes specifically. So we look at what's actually happening with your lashes rather than blaming everything on the weather.
At Haus of Proventus, our lash artists pay attention to those little changes. We may adjust the lengths and weights of extensions or work around delicate new growth to help protect your natural lashes.
Because honey, we're here for gorgeous extensions, but we're also here for the lashes God gave you.
And if you're noticing unusual gaps, irritation, or a sudden change in retention, please tell us! We'd much rather have a conversation about it than have you sitting at home interrogating every lash that falls onto your bathroom counter.
Your Scalp Has Feelings, Too!
While we're busy moisturizing our faces and worrying about our lashes, our poor scalps are sitting up there wondering why nobody invited them to the skincare party.
Your scalp is skin, too, and colder weather can leave it feeling dry, tight, itchy, or flaky. Add hot showers, indoor heating, and frequent heat styling into the mix, and things can get a little dramatic.
Dry scalp and dandruff aren't always the same thing, either. Dryness can cause small flakes, while dandruff may involve oiliness, irritation, and other factors that require a different approach.
Try using a gentle shampoo suited to your scalp, keeping showers comfortably warm instead of boiling hot, and conditioning your hair appropriately.
And speaking of hair, if your ends are feeling brittle, rough, or frizzy, that's not necessarily shedding. Sometimes your hair simply needs better conditioning and protection from heat and friction.
Remember, there's a difference between hair falling out from the root and hair breaking along the strand. One is part of your natural growth cycle; the other may be a sign that your hair needs some extra TLC.
Your Summer Routine Called. She Said It's Time to Move On.
Here's a little truth we love sharing with our clients: your skincare routine isn't a marriage contract. You're allowed to change it!
What worked beautifully in July might not be doing you any favors in November.
During the warmer months, you might prefer lightweight moisturizers, oil-control products, and refreshing treatments. Once fall and winter roll around, your skin may start asking for richer hydration, gentler exfoliation, and a little extra barrier support.
And please, for the love of beautiful skin, don't put away your sunscreen just because the sun isn't making you sweat anymore. UV rays don't take winter vacations, and neither should your SPF.
At Haus of Proventus, our licensed estheticians work with professional skincare brands like Circadia to help create personalized routines and facial treatments that support your skin through every season.
We want you to understand what your skin needs and why, because a good skincare routine shouldn't require a chemistry degree, a second mortgage, or 47 different serums.
Sometimes simple really is better.
A Little Love Goes a Long Way, Y'all!
At the end of the day, seasonal changes are a natural part of life. Our skin gets drier, our hair goes through its growth cycles, and our lashes occasionally decide they need a fresh start.
The important thing is knowing what's normal, recognizing when something needs attention, and making small adjustments to keep yourself feeling comfortable and confident.
Whether your skin is begging for hydration, your lash extensions are acting a little unpredictable, or you're simply ready to give yourself some much-deserved attention, we're here to help.
At Haus of Proventus Beauty Salon in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, we believe beauty should feel personal, welcoming, and never intimidating. We're here to answer your questions, share a little knowledge, and help you find what works best for you.
And if we happen to share a laugh while we're at it? Well, that's just part of the experience.
